Fort Collins Water Restrictions Are Here

The fire last summer and low snow-pack level this winter has led to lower levels water available for use in 2013.

The following is from the City of Fort Collins Website at www.fcgov.com/utilities/what-we-do/water/water-supply-demand/water-restrictions: Use Water Wisely¹

Response Level 1 water restrictions will begin April 1. Given the challenges facing our water supplies, we hope starting restrictions early may help avoid the need for higher restriction levels later this summer.

The Water Shortage Response Plan outlines restrictions for four levels of water shortage. A PDF file is available online.

Level 1 Highlights

Lawn watering will be allowed two days per week:

  • Even residential addresses: Thursday and Sunday
  • Odd residential addresses: Wednesday and Saturday
  • Commercial/businesses, multi-family and HOAs: Tuesday and Friday

Use a shut-off nozzle when watering with a hose.

Watering flowers, trees, shrubs and vegetable gardens will not be restricted, but a hose shut-off nozzle is recommended.

No watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. or on Mondays (even with a permit).

 Other restrictions:

  • Car washing: shut-off nozzle and bucket required
  • Impervious surfaces: washing with water not allowed (e.g., driveways, sidewalks)

Free facility assessments offered.

Violations and Permits

Education is the first step of enforcing restrictions. First violations will receive a written warning and information about the water restrictions. Second and following violations are subject to a minimum fine of $50 each ($250 for non-residential), up to a maximum fine of $1,000 per violation.

Special permits will be available to allow for exceptions to assigned watering days. Applications must be submitted and approved by Fort Collins Utilities. If issued, a sign must be posted that is visible from the street stating the details of the permit.

  • New seed or sod for lawns: exempt from restrictions for three weeks for sod and four weeks for seed
  • Large properties with more than four acres: limit of one inch per week of water applied per zone
  • Medical hardship: may choose different watering days
  • Religious objections: may choose an alternate watering day
  • Well or raw water: use is not restricted, but signage is recommended; free signs are available
