The Green Menace: Emerald Ash Borers Come to the Front Range.

It is not often that bugs make the news, yet the Emerald Ash Borer has spread its tiny wings and began terrorizing Colorado in September of 2013.  You have probably heard about them on the news in the past few months, and here at Lawn Doctor, we thought we would lay down the basics so you can understand, watch for, and, if necessary, treat your trees for the Emerald Ash Borer.

First off, we would like to note that the Emerald Ash Borers have not been seen in Fort Collins, Loveland or anywhere North of Boulder, When  they do spread it’s predicated that they will most likely head south towards Denver, and it could take years for them to get this far north.  Still, it is best to  be as prepared as possible by making sure your trees are healthy and you are in the know.

Appearance and Behavior

As the name suggests, the Emerald Ash Borer has a deep green shimmering body, with amber colored wings.  They are between 9 and 13 millimeters long, and resemble a small beetle.  They lay their eggs on ash trees, where they then hatch, and the larva bury themselves deep inside the tree.  As they feed off the tree, they make long twisted shapes in the wood, and then bury themselves deep in the trees.

What to watch for:

Along with the skinny, spirally shapes, there are several other warning signs you should watch for.  First, as Spring gets underway, you may notice that the woodpeckers have come for a visit.  If there is one tree that they seem to like best, and keep returning to like an all you can eat buffet, then it is probably infested, and it is time to give us a call.

You also want to watch for thinning foliage in the upper canopy of your ash trees, and, of course, many of the other things that signify a sick tree such as shriveled leaves and discoloration.  Also, talk to your neighbors; if there are reports of Ash Borers in your area, protecting your trees with Lawn Doctor’s Emerald Ash Borer control plan is an excellent course of action.  Please call us if you have any questions or concerns about your trees.  A certified arborist is here to help you.
